Did Jesus Have to Die for Us to be Forgiven?

Billy GrahamBy Billy Graham

Q: I've heard since I was a child that Jesus died so we could be forgiven. But surely there must have been another way for God to forgive us. For example, couldn't He have just declared that we were forgiven, the same way we forgive someone who's hurt us? -- Mrs. W.McM.

A: No, there was no other way; if there had been, God would have taken it, and would not have endured the agony of watching His only Son being put to death.

In fact, just hours before His arrest and death the Bible says Jesus fervently prayed that another way might be found to win our salvation, so He wouldn't have to endure the terror of what awaited Him. But there was no other way, and in a final act of perfect surrender Jesus accepted what He must endure on our behalf. The Bible says He "fell with his face to the ground and prayed, 'My Father, if it is possible, may this cup (of suffering) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will'" (Matthew 26:39).

Why was there no other way? The reason is because when we sin, we break God's law -- and because God is just, He can't simply ignore His laws or act as if our sins don't matter. If we break a law and are caught, we must pay the penalty for what we've done. In a far deeper way, when we break God's laws, the penalty must be paid -- the penalty of death and Hell.

But Jesus Christ paid the penalty for us! He was without sin -- but on the cross all our sins were placed on Him, and He took upon Himself the death and Hell that we deserve. Are you trusting Him alone for your salvation?

Buzz Ballad: Illegal Wood

—apologies to the Beatles and “Norwegian Wood

                                                                               I once made guitars
And built up a small company
The instruments were inlaid

So they’d look good, with Indian wood

                                                                              My guitars gathered fame
For their fine riffs, and as state gifts

But then I suffered a raid

The government grabbed the wood I had

They told me the woods that I’d purchased had a legal flaw

According to Indian, but not to American, law

                                                                                         But my competitor
Uses the same wood and was ignored

The government plays a lyre

Made from that good Indian wood

Simple Truths of Life

An excerpt from
Simple Truths of Life
by Linda Ellis
There is an unspoken balance
time has clearly explained
between what I've lost over the years
and all that I have gained...

Every trait that I surrender
as I slowly "lose" my youth
is replaced with a life's lesson;
traded for...
a Simple Truth.

I am the product of my years;
they have created what is me.
And every day that I have lived
has made me who I want to be.

Each person I have known or loved
is a part of who I am today.
Each left me something in my life;
each helped me find my way.

I've heard it said, "If I knew then
everything that I know now..."
But we are taught at the proven pace
that time...and life...will both allow.

These truths I've learned
from things I've done
and places that I have been...
what I'd give to take them back with me
and live my life again.

Improve Every Moment

By: Leo Babauta

I’m a big proponent of slowing downsimplifyingdoing less, and being less busy … but what if you can’t?

What if your life can’t be made less busy — are you doomed to a life of anxiety and unhappiness?

No. I’m going to share with you a very simple tool that might just transform your life. It’s something I’ve been trying in the last few months, and I can attest that it works brilliantly.

This one little method will help you to:

  • Be more present, so life doesn’t rush past you without you noticing.
  • Enjoy every activity you do more, so life is better all the time.
  • Feel more relaxed, so every day is as good as a vacation.
  • Be ready to handle anything that comes your way.

Not bad for a very tiny method, no? Let’s dive in.

Busy vs. relaxed

Normally we have two different modes in life. There’s the busy of our everyday lives, and then there’s the relaxed mode, which happens when we have some unstructured time: vacation, a day at the beach, a spa getaway, some time in the park with the kids.

Relaxed mode is one where we perhaps think less and feel more. We just soak in the sun, the sounds, the sensations. This is a child-like time, because it’s the mode that young children are in the most. We do our best to train kids not to be like this, so they can be good workers when they grow up and serve our corporate masters.

And so we grow up to be in busy mode most of the week, and if we’re lucky we get a day or two, maybe only an hour or two of relaxed mode. When the Internet sucks us in, we have less relaxed mode because the Internet keeps us in our minds, and we forget about the physical world around us.

How can we change this? How can we bring the child-like relaxed, sensory mode back into our everyday lives, not just during breaks and meditation/yoga time and vacations?

It’s not that difficult, if you practice.

The Zen State

When we are in relaxed mode, we notice the sensations of the wind and sun, the sounds of water and laughter, the brilliant colors of nature, the smiles around us, the grass or sand between our toes. We are feeling instead of thinking. The sensations of our bodies flow into our minds, and it makes us relaxed, happy.

We can re-learn this mode of being with practice. Do it now. You’re reading a computer or mobile device screen, so your mind is in the world of the Internet … but your body is in the physical world. If you’re sitting, your butt can feel the chair. Your back might be a bit hunched. Your fingers are on a keyboard or mouse. Is the air around you cold or warm? Are there sounds you can notice? Is your jaw clenched? Notice your breathing.

When you put your focus into physcial sensations, you are entering relaxed mode instead of thinking mode. It’s not that you’re completely relaxed, but you’re in the same state of mind as the times you are relaxed, like yoga or the beach or lazing away a Sunday in bed.

Once you learn to do this, you can do it any time. In fact, all the time.

If you’re taking a shower, feel the water running down you, soak in the temperature and the sound of running water. If you’re eating, taste every little nuance of the food, smell the food, feel the texture in your mouth, feel the movement of your hand going to your mouth.

Do this as you work, as you talk on the phone or respond to emails or walk to a meeting or drive to an appointment, noticing the sensations on your skin, the colors around you, the sounds of humanity, your breath coming in and leaving you. Do this at home, as you do chores or prepare food or clean up or get ready for work. Do this throughout your day, and you will be in a constant state of relaxation and enjoyment.

It will transform everything you do, if you do it. It will turn busy-ness into being present, harriedness into enjoyment.

Life will be lived, instead of ignored.

A Thanksgiving Divorce

A man in Phoenix calls his son in New York two days before Thanksgiving and says "I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing. Forty-five years of misery is enough."

"Pop, what are you talking about?" the son demands.

"We can't stand the sight of each other any longer. We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her."

Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like heck they're getting divorced," she shouts, "I'll take care of this."

She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at her father, "You are NOT getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?" and hangs up.

The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. "Okay," he says, "they're coming for Thanksgiving and paying their own way."

Bone Broth: Heal Your Gut and Lose Cellulite!

Have you noticed that modern convenience has abandoned traditional foods?

Most of what is available to eat today, whether from the market or restaurant, is either highly processed or made with ingredients that are themselves highly processed. What do we lose when we stop eating traditional foods? In a word, our health!

Traditional foods are:

  • Sprouted and fermented grains
  • Fermented vegetables, cultured dairy
  • Organ meats
  • Bone broth

The Amazing Health Benefits of Bone Broth

Besides the exquisite flavor that bone broth imparts into any savory dish, it:

  • Is full of minerals.
  • Fortifies the immune system.
  • Enhances digestion.
  • Nourishes all body parts related to collagen. This means joints, tendons, ligaments, skin, mucus membranes, and bone.

Bone Broth Is Mineral Rich

Clearly, long-cooked broth made from bones will be rich in a dynamic array of minerals. Bone is, after all, highly mineralized. A well-made bone broth will give your body calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, sodium, potassium, sulfate, and fluoride. All delivered in a form that your body understands. In order to pull these precious minerals from the bone during cooking, add an acid, like apple cider vinegar, to the water before cooking.

How the Collagen in Bone Broth Heals the Gut

Bones, marrow, skin, tendons, ligaments, and the cartilage that sometimes accompanies a bone are all made of a protein molecule called collagen. Collagen contains two very special amino acids: proline and glycine.

Collagen has been found to help heal the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, which includes the stomach and the intestines. This means that heartburn or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and many of the conditions associated with intestinal inflammation can be helped with bone broth.

  • Collagen and gelatin have been shown to benefit gastric ulcers. (1)
  • Proline is necessary for the formation of collagen.
  • Glycine improves digestion by increasing gastric acid secretion. (2)
  • Glutamine, also found in bone broth, is important metabolic fuel for cells in the small intestine. (3)

Besides collagen, cartilage contains something called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Studies have found an underlying deficiency of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in patients with Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. (4) Correcting a deficiency and helping to repair a compromised gut wall is another good reason to consume bone broth regularly.

Bone Broth Helps with Wrinkles, Stretch Marks, and Cellulite

Bone broth contains collagen to make your skin supple and radiant. This delicious, mineral-rich broth can be used to make soup to support smooth, strong skin and reduce cellulite.

Drinking bone broth makes skin supple. Cellulite does not arise from carrying excess fat. Haven’t you ever seen a thin person with cellulite? It is common. Most people are taught to choose skinless and boneless meat and to fear animal fats. This is why even those who are slender will not be able to shake cellulite until they change their diet. (5)

  • Cellulite comes from a lack of connective tissue.
  • The smoothness of skin is from an abundance of connective tissue.
  • Collagen-rich bone broth will supply your skin with the tools that it needs to support itself.
  • Adding chicken feet, animal joints, and knuckles to a bone broth will increase the amount of collagen available.

MAKING A GOOD BONE BROTH

When collecting bones, go for variety.

This is because the marrow found in bones is either yellow marrow or red marrow. Yellow marrow is found in the central portion of long bones. It is where fats are stored.

Red marrow, on the other hand, is found in flat bones. These are:

  • Hip bone
  • Sternum
  • Skull
  • Ribs
  • Vertebrae
  • Scapula
  • The ends of long bones

Red marrow is so valuable because it is where blood stem cells are found. When you drink a broth made with a good source of red marrow, you are drinking all those stem cell factors that ultimately build your body’s strength and support your own immune function.

Not sure what kind of bone to use?

Any kind will do. You can even use an assortment of different animals. Just make sure that all bones are sourced from animals that are organic and grass-fed or pastured and free-range. Remember, everything that the animal ate, how it lived, and where it lived all factor into the health benefits of your broth.

You can purchase bones ready to cook, or you can collect bones from meals and store them in your freezer until you have enough to build a good stock. Remember to only use bones and feet from animals that are grass-fed or free-range.

Make sure the bones, especially large bones, are cut into small pieces. This reduces cooking time and allows more material to become a part of the broth.

Cooking Suggestions

1. Place bones into a large stock pot and cover with water.

2. Add two tablespoon of apple cider vinegar or wine to water prior to cooking. This helps to pull out important nutrients from the bones.

3. Fill stock pot with filtered water.  Leave plenty of room for water to boil.

4. Heat slowly. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to simmer for at least 6 hours. Remove scum as it arises.

5. Cook long and slow. Chicken bones can cook for 6-48 hours. Beef bones can cook for 12-72 hours. A long and slow cook time is necessary in order to fully extract the nutrients in and around bone.

After cooking, the broth will cool and a layer of fat will harden on top. This layer protects the broth beneath. Discard this layer only when you are about to eat the broth.

Consume broth within 3 days or freeze for later use. Sip on the broth or use as the base in a nutrient-dense soup.

Use Bone Broth with Your Next Fast

During a fast, the body receives little nourishment from food. Because of this, sometimes muscle tissue can break down.

  • When glycine is consumed, this limits or prevents the breakdown of protein tissue, like muscle.
  • Glycine is used for gluconeogenesis, which is when the liver makes sugar fuel for the body to burn in the absence of glucose.
  • Glycine is also necessary to detoxify the body of chemicals. This is because glycine is a precursor amino acid for glutathione, which is a major antioxidant and detoxifying agent in the body.
  • Glycine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It has been shown to improve sleep, as well as boost memory and performance. (6)

What to Remember Most About This Article:

Bone broth is rich in minerals to strengthen the immune system and support healthy digestion. Bone broth also contains collagen to strengthen tendons, joints, ligaments, bone, and skin.

The collagen in bone broth will help heal the lining of the gut to relieve heartburn, GERD, and other types of intestinal inflammation. On top of that, collagen will support healthy skin to make it supple and strong to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

You can make bone broth at home and even use it in your next fast to give your body ample nourishment. The glycine in bone broth will detoxify the body of harmful chemicals, improve sleep, and boost memory and performance.
