The American Clean Energy and Security Act

Learn More About This Issue America has reached a critical juncture on climate change. To avoid the most catastrophic consequences of global warming, the United States and other developed nations must reduce global warming pollution at least 80 percent below 2005 levels by the middle of this century -- and inspire developing countries to do their fair share as well.  (All Smoke and Mirrors)

In June, the House of Representatives passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act. The bill would reduce global warming pollution 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020 and 83 percent below 2005 levels by 2050. It also would set a goal of producing 20 percent of America's energy from renewable energy, and fund clean energy technologies and green jobs training programs to empower local communities to build these technologies.

The American Clean Energy and Security Act would establish the United States as a worldwide leader in clean energy technologies and prevent the worst effects of global warming from occurring. It represents a bold first step toward sending Americans back to work building a clean energy economy and reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

As senators begin to craft similar legislation during July and August, they must work to strengthen the House bill's pollution reduction goals and investments in energy efficiency.

What to do:
Send a message urging your senators NOT to support strong climate and energy legislation like the American Clean Energy and Security Act.
