New tool allows CIA to monitor social media chatter

Hey! Look! Big Brother decided to hop on the social media bandwagon! Sheesh, and you thought that Facebook Friend Request from your mom would make you paranoid.

The intelligence agencies of the U.S. government will soon have their curious little ears pressed up against internet, combing through blogs, Tweets and other web chatter as part of a broader movement by the government to become more fluent in social media and Internet technology. Visual Technologies, in partnership with the government’s independent strategic investment division, has developed the platform that government officials say will be used, in part, to monitor conversations surrounding national security issues. The government’s multi-million dollar investment in Visual Technologies is apparently also related to a specific, undisclosed government project.
