Study: Republicans more informed than Democrats

Republicans appear to be more informed about current events than Democrats, a new study shows.

A survey by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press asked people a dozen questions about current events and conditions, such as the unemployment rate, number of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan, head of the Senate Finance Committee and television personalities.

In 10 of the 12 questions, a greater percentage of Republicans than Democrats knew the correct answer.

The two questions in which Republicans didn’t outshine their rivals asked about what the “public option” referred to – 59 percent of both Republicans and Democrats knew it was health-care related – and whether U.S. spending was higher than spending in Europe. A total of 67 percent of Democrats knew the U.S. spent more than Europe compared to 62 percent of Republicans.

Independents performed better than Democrats, beating the Republicans on five questions and tying them on one.

The report also notes that people under 30 fared the worst of age-based groups.
