Home design, building strategies that pay off
Going green might be a way to help the environment, but it is also a proven way to save money. According to David Densford, inside sales and marketing coordinator for EH Systems LLC in New Braunfels, the Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) his Texas company manufactures for homes saves homeowners 50 to 75 percent annually in cooling and heating costs.
SIPs are made of wood shavings and styrofoam and are one of the greenest building materials being used today. Densford says homes made with SIPs meet green building, indoor air quality and energy standards that give them greater appeal in a MLS search engine and a higher resale value.
"As the country is becoming more energy-conscious, we are reducing the energy needs of homeowners," Densford said. "The SIPs, due to their air-tight structural shells, create a controllable indoor air quality and can withstand 140 plus mile per hour winds. The panels are two to three times stronger than an average home built of two-by-fours."
EH Systems has been a GO TEXAN member for more than a year since opening its insulated doors at a new facility in September 2008. EH Systems has the capability to be North America's largest SIP manufacturer and is one of the only two SIP manufacturers with a Texas Department of Insurance "windstorm" rating, allowing the use of their panels to build along the Gulf Coast.
