REM's 1991 hit "Losing My Religion" was a veiled, deeply personal account by singer/songwriter Michael Stipe of how it feels, after a lifetime as a Democrat, suddenly to realize that your liberal ideals are a crock and you've been a secret conservative all your life. Stipe has been a closeted member of the Republican Party since 1991 and is in fact chairman of the highly secretive Republicans for Rock branch, whose membership allegedly also includes Ted Nugent, Snoop Dogg, Brandon Flowers, Lady Gaga, and Jon Bon Jovi. The personal happiness he has experienced as a result of his change of political heart has unfortunately resulted in a dramatic falling-off in the quality of his music. Artists need pain and misery to produce great work. It is no coincidence that REM's classic Automatic for the People album was recorded while Stipe was involved in a bitter power struggle with the late Gianni Versace for the presidency of the National Rifle Association (Gay Men's Branch). |
