Only five of 10 Senate candidates and 40 of 130 candidates from the Tea Party won their race. The numbers include any candidate either backed by, or associated with, a Tea Party group.
However, candidates claiming major wins in the Senate have promised to topple the existing order in Washington in some form or another, either by cutting taxes or repealing the health care reform bill passed this year. Candidates also spoke about reducing the size of government.
The Tea Party also suffered some high profile losses: Sharron Angle of Nevada and Christine O’Donnell of Delaware each lost their respective race on Tuesday. In another race that has yet to be decided, Joe Miller of Alaska appears to be headed for defeat against write-in candidate and GOP incumbent Lisa Murkowski.
It may take weeks for a formal winner to be declared in the Alaska Senate race because the write-in votes still need to be counted.
