Tomatoes Are An Affordable, Healthy Food Option — And May Even Prevent Disease

Tomatoes Are An Affordable, Healthy Food Option And May Even Prevent Disease

An article published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine touts the benefits of tomatoes and tomato products as a readily-available, cost-effective way to achieve an antioxidant-rich diet.

Researchers compiled and examined past studies on the fruit and found that it is widely consumed by Americans and may be effective in preventing cancer, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

"Leveraging emerging science about tomatoes and tomato products may be one simple and effective strategy to help individuals increase vegetable [and fruit] intake, leading to improved overall eating patterns, and ultimately, better health," said study authors.

Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, and this antioxidant has the added benefit of becoming more powerful when cooked. So, long-simmered marinara sauce may be even healthier than fresh tomatoes.

Authors of the study noted that tomatoes may also have anti-inflammatory properties, boost cognition and provide a shield from sun-related skin damage.

Since tomatoes are inexpensive, available to most people year-round and appreciated by individuals of all ages and cultures, the researchers said that Americans should make an effort to consume more of the fruit to promote overall health
