As the 2010 contests get underway, CBS News will track states and districts seeing the most heated contests this year. Factoring in these assessments are the voting history and demographics of the state or district, its candidates and their fundraising, and the individual characteristics of the campaigns.

Competitive Index Guide:
Most competitive races: Watch for contests that could go either way, including incumbents who'll face tough races and/or challengers with real expectations of winning. Very competitive: Will likely be hard-fought, probably close races, but one side may start off with a political or electoral edge.Potentially competitive: One side has a early edge because of the electorate or an especially strong candidate or incumbent, but there's room for things to get hotter if campaign dynamics change... Probable Dem/GOP: Less likely to see heated contests this year, given partisan electorates and/or a strong candidate or incumbent on one side... but things can always change.
