Jack's Porch: An Upscale Sports Bar in Southlake, Texas

Unlike some Fort Worthians whom we here at the Weekly know, we don't harbor any grudges against Southlake. Yes, a lot of rich white people live there, and, yes, shopping appears to be the neighborhood's second most popular sport (with high-school football being No. 1). But c'mon. There's a lot to like about the place, especially the plethora of independently owned bars/restaurants there. Yes, Southlake has a few, not least of which being Jack's Porch (1239 Main St., Southlake, 817-251-6776), a sports bar of sorts, one that's a lot cleaner-looking and fresher-smelling than your average game-watching/beer-drinking outpost and more adventuresome in the menu department. Appetizers include the Hummus Three Ways (roasted red pepper, black bean, and roasted garlic topped with olive oil and feta cheese, served with grilled pita bread), the salmon sliders (blackened Norwegian salmon topped with house-pickled red onions, nori, and spicy mayonnaise), and the portobello fries (tempura-battered, flash-fried, and dusted with Parmesan, served with Parmesan ranch). Jack's burgers and sandwiches are pretty diverse. Choose from the Barnyard Burger (char-grilled certified Angus beef topped with cheddar cheese, bacon, and a fried egg), Kobe sliders (three of 'em, Waygu beef from Circle L Ranch in Waxahachie, topped with mustard and pickles), and the grouper sandwich (blackened and served with spicy mayo). Jack's entrees include shrimp grits (sauteed jumbo shrimp, andouille sausage, diced jalapenos, and a spicy cream sauce over creamy grits, topped with diced tomatoes and green onions), Parmesan-crusted tilapia (pan-seared, topped with pesto cream sauce, and served with herbed rice and the veggie of the day), and the chile-dusted sirloin (char-grilled 8-ouncer dusted with ancho and chipotle powder, served with buttermilk mashed potatoes and the veggie of the day). The price range for the apps is $6-9.50, and entrees can run as low as $8.50 with a high of $18 (the grilled shrimp dinner). And speaking of price points, happy hour at Jack's is all day Sunday, 2 'til 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 11 a.m. 'til 7 p.m. Saturdays. Bottles are half-price on Tuesdays, and there's live music Wednesday and Saturday nights. Jack's Porch also offers low-carb martinis called Smartinis; all of 'dem trophy wives out in Southlake gotta maintain their girlish figures, after all.
